You might be wondering who I am, what I do, why I’m here, how I got my name, and when I started blogging. This page will answer those questions.
Who are you?
I’m Cooley Horner. I’m originally from a small town in Tennessee, and I now live in a semi-drafty apartment in Concord as I attend the University of New Hampshire School of Law. I share a birthday with Susan B. Anthony, Claire Bloom, and Shooter McGavin from “Happy Gilmore” (not bad company). I was presented as a debutante when I was 20, and I’m happily dating a guy who rides too many bicycles but seems to be smiling all of the time.
What do you do?
As an undergraduate student, I studied communication. I wrote a 230+ page senior thesis called “‘Touched Already By A Glory That Leaves No Man Ever Quite the Same’: Charisma in Modern Campaign Rhetoric.” If you’re ever bored on a rainy day, you can read it here.
I am currently a first-year law student. This means I spend a lot of time reading cases, then rereading cases, and ultimately writing about them. I argue and debate, talk and persuade, and then read some more. (Did I mention the reading?) Law school has been a great fit for me, but blogging is a welcome respite from the day-to-day routine of school and studying. Shakespeare said that we should “first kill all the lawyers,” but I think he would have been impressed by my performance as the Danish prince in my senior production of “The 15-Minute Hamlet.”
How did you get your name?
Before you ask, the answer is yes. Cooley is my real first name: not a nickname, not a middle name, and not a last name. It comes to me from my great great grandfather, and I am pretty proud of it. It’s also the name of a law school in Michigan, an unfortunate disease, and a subpar comedy from the late 90s.
When did you start blogging?
I launched this WordPress blog in 2011, left it sadly dormant for several months, and resumed it as part of a Lenten resolution in 2012.
My favorite movie is “Gone with the Wind.” I was an RA for two years at BC, and I hate the smell of mint. As a self-confessed pop culture nut, I can’t do without “The Wire,” “Downton Abbey,” “30 Rock,” “Parks & Recreation,” “Breaking Bad,” “The X-Files,” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” and I’m sadly always willing to forgive Don Draper of anything. I’m an aunt, and I love random trivia. I adored old movies as a kid, and I enjoy reading and cooking. I have two cats named Teaspoon and Tiddlywinks, and I’m pretty good at Words with Friends.
I’m also bad at skiing.
